Realm: Real-Time Line-of-Sight Maintenance in Multi-Robot Navigation with Unknown Obstacles

-- Multi-robot navigation in complex environments relies on inter-robot communication and mutual observations for coordination and situational awareness. This paper studies the multi-robot navigation problem in unknown environments with line-of-sight (LoS) connectivity constraints. While previous works are limited to known environment models to derive the LoS constraints, this paper eliminates such requirements by directly formulating the LoS constraints between robots from their real-time point cloud measurements, leveraging point cloud visibility analysis techniques. We propose a novel LoS-distance metric to quantify both the urgency and sensitivity of losing LoS between robots considering potential robot movements. Moreover, to address the imbalanced urgency of losing LoS between two robots, we design a fusion function to capture the overall urgency while generating gradients that facilitate robots' collaborative movement to maintain LoS. The LoS constraints are encoded into a potential function that preserves the positivity of the Fiedler eigenvalue of the robots' network graph to ensure connectivity. Finally, we establish a LoS-constrained exploration framework that integrates the proposed connectivity controller . We showcase its applications in multi-robot exploration in complex unknown environments, where robots can always maintain the LoS connectivity through distributed sensing and communication, while collaboratively mapping the unknown environment.
Discovering Directly-Follows Graph Model for Acyclic Processes

Process mining is the common name for a range of methods and approaches aimed at analysing and improving processes. Specifically, methods that aim to derive process models from event logs fall under the category of process discovery. Within the range of processes, acyclic processes form a distinct category. In such processes, previously performed actions are not repeated, forming chains of unique actions. However, due to differences in the order of actions, existing process discovery methods can provide models containing cycles even if a process is acyclic. This paper presents a new process discovery algorithm that allows to discover acyclic DFG models for acyclic processes. A model is discovered by partitioning an event log into parts that provide acyclic DFG models and merging them while avoiding the formation of cycles. The resulting algorithm was tested both on real-life and artificial event logs. Absence of cycles improves model visual clarity and precision, also allowing to apply cycle-sensitive methods or visualisations to the model.
Holistic Understanding of 3D Scenes as Universal Scene Description

3D scene understanding is a long-standing challenge in computer vision and a key component in enabling mixed reality, wearable computing, and embodied AI. Providing a solution to these applications requires a multifaceted approach that covers scene-centric, object-centric, as well as interaction-centric capabilities. While there exist numerous datasets approaching the former two problems, the task of understanding interactable and articulated objects is underrepresented and only partly covered by current works. In this work, we address this shortcoming and introduce (1) an expertly curated dataset in the Universal Scene Description (USD) format, featuring high-quality manual annotations, for instance, segmentation and articulation on 280 indoor scenes; (2) a learning-based model together with a novel baseline capable of predicting part segmentation along with a full specification of motion attributes, including motion type, articulated and interactable parts, and motion parameters; (3) a benchmark serving to compare upcoming methods for the task at hand. Overall, our dataset provides 8 types of annotations - object and part segmentations, motion types, movable and interactable parts, motion parameters, connectivity, and object mass annotations. With its broad and high-quality annotations, the data provides the basis for holistic 3D scene understanding models. All data is provided in the USD format, allowing interoperability and easy integration with downstream tasks. We provide open access to our dataset, benchmark, and method's source code.
URDF+: An Enhanced URDF for Robots with Kinematic Loops

Designs incorporating kinematic loops are becoming increasingly prevalent in the robotics community. Despite the existence of dynamics algorithms to deal with the effects of such loops, many modern simulators rely on dynamics libraries that require robots to be represented as kinematic trees. This requirement is reflected in the de facto standard format for describing robots, the Universal Robot Description Format (URDF), which does not support kinematic loops resulting in closed chains. This paper introduces an enhanced URDF, termed URDF+, which addresses this key shortcoming of URDF while retaining the intuitive design philosophy and low barrier to entry that the robotics community values. The URDF+ keeps the elements used by URDF to describe open chains and incorporates new elements to encode loop joints. We also offer an accompanying parser that processes the system models coming from URDF+ so that they can be used with recursive rigid-body dynamics algorithms for closed-chain systems that group bodies into local, decoupled loops. This parsing process is fully automated, ensuring optimal grouping of constrained bodies without requiring manual specification from the user. We aim to advance the robotics community towards this elegant solution by developing efficient and easy-to-use software tools.
Learning Hierarchical Information Flow with Recurrent Neural Modules

We propose ThalNet, a deep learning model inspired by neocortical communication via the thalamus. Our model consists of recurrent neural modules that send features through a routing center, endowing the modules with the flexibility to share features over multiple time steps. We show that our model learns to route information hierarchically, processing input data by a chain of modules. We observe common architectures, such as feed forward neural networks and skip connections, emerging as special cases of our architecture, while novel connectivity patterns are learned for the text8 compression task. Our model outperforms standard recurrent neural networks on several sequential benchmarks.
FALCON: Fast Autonomous Aerial Exploration using Coverage Path Guidance

This paper introduces FALCON, a novel Fast Autonomous expLoration framework using COverage path guidaNce, which aims at setting a new performance benchmark in the field of autonomous aerial exploration. Despite recent advancements in the domain, existing exploration planners often suffer from inefficiencies such as frequent revisitations of previously explored regions. FALCON effectively harnesses the full potential of online generated coverage paths in enhancing exploration efficiency. The framework begins with an incremental connectivity-aware space decomposition and connectivity graph construction, which facilitate efficient coverage path planning. Subsequently, a hierarchical planner generates a coverage path spanning the entire unexplored space, serving as a global guidance. Then, a local planner optimizes the frontier visitation order, minimizing traversal time while consciously incorporating the intention of the global guidance. Finally, minimum-time smooth and safe trajectories are produced to visit the frontier viewpoints. For fair and comprehensive benchmark experiments, we introduce a lightweight exploration planner evaluation environment that allows for comparing exploration planners across a variety of testing scenarios using an identical quadrotor simulator. Additionally, a VECO criteria is proposed for an in-depth analysis of FALCON's significant performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art exploration planners. Extensive ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of each component in the proposed framework. Real-world experiments conducted fully onboard further validate FALCON's practical capability in complex and challenging environments. The source code of both the exploration planner FALCON and the exploration planner evaluation environment will be released to benefit the community.
What is my quantum computer good for? Quantum capability learning with physics-aware neural networks

Quantum computers have the potential to revolutionize diverse fields, including quantum chemistry, materials science, and machine learning. However, contemporary quantum computers experience errors that often cause quantum programs run on them to fail. Until quantum computers can reliably execute large quantum programs, stakeholders will need fast and reliable methods for assessing a quantum computer's capability-i.e., the programs it can run and how well it can run them. Previously, off-the-shelf neural network architectures have been used to model quantum computers' capabilities, but with limited success, because these networks fail to learn the complex quantum physics that determines real quantum computers' errors. We address this shortcoming with a new quantum-physics-aware neural network architecture for learning capability models. Our architecture combines aspects of graph neural networks with efficient approximations to the physics of errors in quantum programs. This approach achieves up to $\sim50\%$ reductions in mean absolute error on both experimental and simulated data, over state-of-the-art models based on convolutional neural networks.
